Project Photovoice

Exploring self-determination in autistic youth and their family through photography.

Mission of the project

image.png

Our study aims to explore and center how youth with autism and their families perceive and experience self-determination.

We seek to understand the supports and barriers they encounter, and how these shape their aspirations, agency, and experiences during transitions in life.

By involving both youth with autism and their families, this research provides an integrated view of self-determination across both the self and family. Insights from this study will inform culturally grounded practices that support the development of self-determination skills and guide educators, policymakers, and support systems in creating more inclusive, person-centered transition pathways.

Project Objectives

  1. Understand perceptions of self-determination

We want to explore how autistic youth and their families in Singapore understand and experience self-determination in their everyday lives and future planning.

   2. Identify supports and barrier

We want to discover what helps or hinders autistic youth in developing self-determination skills such as making choices, setting goals, and advocating for themselves within the environments they are in.

   3. Compare youth and family perspectives

We want to examine how autistic youth and their families may think differently or similarly about self-determination, and what these differences might mean for supporting them through transition planning.

The impact we hope for

image.png

The findings aim to support youth with autism in developing self-determination skills that are critical for navigating transitions throughout life.

This project aligns with Singapore’s efforts such as the Enabling Masterplan and the Ministry of Education’s push for inclusive, person-centered policies. Ultimately, this research seeks to inform culturally grounded practices that empower youth with autism to lead more self-determined lives within their environment.

We are looking for participants!
